Content Management Systems
Website technology has advanced to the point that provides business owners and others unparalleled control over their website administration with no programming knowledge necessary. This is accomplished through what is called a content management system or CMS. This is highly desirable because it gives you the ability to control and update your website on your time in real time. Unfortunately, it’s a common story that when updates are needed for a site the webmaster is out of town, too busy, unable to be reached or some other lack of professionalism. Adding a content management system allows you to bypass this frustration.
There are a number of open source or ‘off the shelf’ solutions that can be appropriate for those on a lower budget or without specialized needs. Drupal and Joomla are two common platforms on this front. There can be some drawbacks to these options that may lead you to consider choosing a more customized solution, including:
- The interface can be busy and not user friendly
- There can be functionality limitations
- There can be limitations on how you can integrate the platform within the design elements of your site
- There may be little to no support – if you’re using a free platform, chances are there won’t be a support line to call
A customized content management system is a nice alternative that can actually provide for your exact needs and doesn’t need to cost you a pile. A custom CMS can have a lot of flexibility in the cost because it’s typically priced to the scope of the project. For instance, there may only be two pages of your website that need to be updated with any regularity such as a job posting or resources page. Whereas there would likely not be a need to add CMS ability to the areas that would rarely need updating like an about us or contact page. In other instances the entire site may need to be managed, pricing will reflect these situations accordingly.
When considering a custom CMS system, think about the elements of the site that you need to have control over. Here are some examples:
- Text – is the most basic and common
- Pictures – think image galleries, product images, staff headshots, etc
- PDF’s – do you need to upload PDF’s or other documents like Excel or Power Point
A custom CMS set up correctly will not allow you to disrupt the design integrity of the site when making your updates. Any updates should also automatically conform to existing styles, fonts and other site elements.
To the left is one example of a system that we created for a client. They login into this backend through secure and private interface. The tabs at the top of the page represent the areas of the site that they have control over. The page that is showing is part of their jewelry portfolio in which that have the ability to easily update with new product imagery and specifications.
A system of this nature actually pays for itself with each use.
