What Does Your Business Card Say About You?

This post is inspired by the article “15+ Over the Top Business Cards” by xNoleet on GoMediaZine.com.

Even though many business functions have become digitalized, when it comes to networking, nothing makes an impression like a good, firm handshake. Often following the handshake there may be some friendly conversation and then exchanging of business cards (the paper kind, not the digital kind using the “Bump” App on your iPhone). After you leave, the little 2″ x 3.5″ paper card is the only item that your new contact has to remember you by. Since a major part of networking is making an impression and distinguishing yourself (and your brand) from another, I would challenge that your business card should do the same. Having a great business card is like the difference between a weak, little, 2 fingered handshake and the firm, confident one mentioned above.

Here are some examples of people and businesses that decided to make their business card a STATEMENT and a powerful extension of their brand.

I can assure that I would remember the person who gave me a business card that looked like this….

This is my personal favorite. I would collect these.

Throw Away Your Flash Drive

Want to be on the cutting edge of the technological movement? So you have already replaced your cassette tapes for mp3 files, your boom box for satellite radio, and your floppy disks for CD’s. What is next? Throw away your flash drive. But wait you say, how will I get my file from home to my office? Trust me, you don’t need it. (And no, the answer is not through e-mail.)

Physical storage devises are becoming obsolete with the introduction and improvement of online storage methods. Don’t believe me? Think back to the example of the cassettes that you traded in for mp3’s. In that case, the tapes or CD’s that you could physically hold were replaced with small, intangible files that you download from the Internet or access from your computer. File storage is moving in a similar direction.

Now, with online storage portals such as MobleMe, Dropbox, Box.net, Mozy, Wuala and Humyo there is a decreasing need for any type of physical devise to store computer-generated material. Floppy disks, CD’s, and flash drives are becoming a thing of the past.

Recently many of us downloaded Dropbox here at Harlo. Since Dropbox immediately syncs files online and across multiple computers, we are now able to access each other’s files the moment they click “save.” Dropbox also keeps a back-work log, allowing files that are a work-in-progress to be saved and edited without saving numerous re-named drafts. The service is free up to 2GB and really easy to use. They even backup files online. This feature is especially helpful in the event that you have a computer crash or need to access a file from a computer that doesn’t have Dropbox downloaded to it. As long as your work is saved in Dropbox, work can be recovered anywhere, anytime.

Maybe now you feel a little bit more comfortable separating from the flash drive you wear like a necklace everyday. Move forward! If you are still hesitant, here is some further reading…. http://www.getdropbox.com/tour

Old Town Block Party

THE FIRST ANNUAL…
OLD TOWN BLOCK PARTY!

The concept for the Old Town Block Party was sparked by an idea & the desire to re-hang the neighborhood’s historic Hung Far Low sign; a sign for a defunct restaurant that was deemed a public safety hazard.  After coming together behind the common cause of historical importance, common goals and motivation, the creative juices starting flowing.  How could an event come about to both celebrate the history of Old Town/Chinatown while showcasing the burgeoning creative community?  The answer came naturally: a block party, highlighting the local businesses and agencies in the neighborhood, complete with live music, art, food and drink.

Content Management Systems

Website technology has advanced to the point that provides business owners and others unparalleled control over their website administration with no programming knowledge necessary. This is accomplished through what is called a content management system or CMS. This is highly desirable because it gives you the ability to control and update your website on your time in real time. Unfortunately, it’s a common story that when updates are needed for a site the webmaster is out of town, too busy, unable to be reached or some other lack of professionalism. Adding a content management system allows you to bypass this frustration.

There are a number of open source or ‘off the shelf’ solutions that can be appropriate for those on a lower budget or without specialized needs. Drupal and Joomla are two common platforms on this front. There can be some drawbacks to these options that may lead you to consider choosing a more customized solution, including:

  • The interface can be busy and not user friendly
  • There can be functionality limitations
  • There can be limitations on how you can integrate the platform within the design elements of your site
  • There may be little to no support – if you’re using a free platform, chances are there won’t be a support line to call

A customized content management system is a nice alternative that can actually provide for your exact needs and doesn’t need to cost you a pile. A custom CMS can have a lot of flexibility in the cost because it’s typically priced to the scope of the project. For instance, there may only be two pages of your website that need to be updated with any regularity such as a job posting or resources page. Whereas there would likely not be a need to add CMS ability to the areas that would rarely need updating like an about us or contact page. In other instances the entire site may need to be managed, pricing will reflect these situations accordingly.

When considering a custom CMS system, think about the elements of the site that you need to have control over. Here are some examples:

  • Text – is the most basic and common
  • Pictures – think image galleries, product images, staff headshots, etc
  • PDF’s – do you need to upload PDF’s or other documents like Excel or Power Point

A custom CMS set up correctly will not allow you to disrupt the design integrity of the site when making your updates. Any updates should also automatically conform to existing styles, fonts and other site elements.

abc-adminTo the left is one example of a system that we created for a client.  They login into this backend through secure and private interface.  The tabs at the top of the page represent the areas of the site that they have control over. The page that is showing is part of their jewelry portfolio in which that have the ability to easily update with new product imagery and specifications.

A system of this nature actually pays for itself with each use.
